The word "Ayurveda” is compound
of two words - āyus meaning
"life" and the word veda,
which refers to a system of "knowledge". Thus "Ayurveda”
translates as the "knowledge of
life" or even "science of
life".
Ayurveda
is a science which considers health in all aspects of physical, mental,
spiritual and social well being. Only physical health does not account for your
overall well being. When we talk of our growth, it emphasizes on physical,
mental, spiritual and social growth as well. When we move on in life, all these
aspects play collaborative role and support our health.
The origin of Ayurveda is stated to be a divine revelation of the ancient Indian
creator God Lord Brahma.
In
the ancient texts, the great Acharayas
have mentioned their experiences with the patients, use of medicine and effect
on patients. It is of great importance to us. These texts are the guidelines to
treat many diseases using herbal products.
Sushurta, known as the
Father of Modern Surgery, wrote the sushurata
samhita (Textbook of surgery in ayurveda). According to Charaka Samhita (ancient book of medicine), life is a combination
of the body, sense organs, mind and soul, which sustains the body over time and
guides the processes of rebirth.
Ayurveda
is a quite logical science based on well proven scientific principles. The
science of Ayurveda doesn’t only
depend upon the symptoms as told by the patient rather it believes in a
thorough examination to explore the root cause of the ailment in the patients
body. A
proper diagnosis underlies an effective treatment, whereas ignorance of diagnosis
leads to inefficient treatment.
