Brief account on Rajas (Quality of Movement and Activity)

Rajas influence all forms of movement and activity. These activities are required to get things done in life and to achieve our goals. When in excess, it brings restlessness, hyper-activity, pride, jealousy and competitiveness. It results in fear, anxiety and agitated behavior.

Rajasic personalities – These personalities are medium in intelligence. They are quite active in nature. They try to control the situations and dominate others. They can express emotions very effectively. Impulsive actions are taken that are later regretted and which disturb the mind. They incline themselves towards fanaticism. Their satisfaction levels are very high and are quite ambitious. They are highly manipulative in nature and can mould a situation which suits them very well. Hence, they can be considered as selfish persons also. People (with lots of rajasic content) value power, prestige, business and success on the material level. They hold their own beliefs very firmly and try to change others. Their minds are so full that they don’t really listen to any advice.
They tend to indulge themselves in routine activities excessively disturbing to the internal system. Excessive thinking, talking, traveling, spending more time on the telephone, hours on the computer, exposing to anything violent, will all possess quite disturbing effect upon the mind.
Sleep is disturbed or troubled by intense dreams. They do not feel fresh even after taking long hours of sleep.

Rajasic Foods – Excess sweet, spicy, hot, salty and strong stimulants like tea, coffee, nicotine and alcohol comes under this category. Junk foods like potato chips and chocolate bars, pungent foods (such as raw onions and garlic), can lead to agitation and disturbance of mind.
Those of a rajasic nature never give unconditionally. It is always done with some expectation rather than genuine altruism. Relationships based mainly on their own needs and desires rather than on reciprocal interest and regard. Most legumes and beans increase rajas slightly.
If you want to balance Rajas, limit exposure to foods, people and situations which disturb our minds and increase exposure to more sattvik foods, lifestyle and people.
Anything that increases satva will decrease rajas.
