Brief account on Tamas or Inactive State

Tamas represents the dark side of mind. More tamas in body, more lethargy we are. It causes mental weakness in the body. Tamas is the way nature completes or destroys things. We need tamas to fall asleep and rest but excess of tamas make us dull, inert, lazy and depressed.
Tamasic personalities – These are usually lethargy and possess poor memory. They are stubborn in nature and never listen to the good advice of others. Tamasic people show little desire to improve physically or mentally, lack the will power and discipline to do so. Individuals with a strong tamasic nature engage in a self-destructive diet and lifestyle. Such individuals become increasingly less caring about themselves and others. It is unlikely that they will  go in company of good people, read holy articles and attend yoga classes unless dragged by someone else .Their mind possesses very poor judgmental qualities.  They are dishonest in approach and unclean in habits. They show no care for their own health.
They usually sleep heavily and it is difficult to wake them up.
Tamasic food - They used to eat, drink and have sex excessively. They like to have alcohol in large quantities. Leftover food items, deeply fried food, excessive meat, chicken, seafood, eggs and hard cheeses are known to enhance tamas in body.
Certain herbs and spices, such as nutmeg have a dulling effect on mind, are tamasic in nature. That is why, in cases of insomnia, nutmeg is used as a traditional aid to sleep.
A tamastic diet benefits neither the mind nor the body. Prana, the divine energy is withdrawn, reasoning power of mind becomes clouded and a sense of inertia sets in. Immunity of body is destroyed and mind will be filled with emotions such as anger and greed. Overeating is also considered as tamasic.
Tamasic foods include alcohol, tobacco, eggs, drugs, meat, stale, overripe substances, overcooked and fried food.
Satvic food does not disturb the alertness of mind but tamasic food makes mind dull and sluggish.
To Balance tamas means clearing out the cobwebs in the brain. Fresh air, peaceful meditation, dynamic exercise and sattvic food, lifestyle and environment will help to balance tamas.
Since nowadays, we are suffering with stress and tensions. We should try to increase sattvic content in our diet and lessen the tamasic food. As this will help in creating peace to the mind and will enhance the alertness of the mind .
